It is lovely to be back with all the Early Learning Centre staff, children and families after my extended break. I want to thank Danielle Carpenter for taking my place as the Acting Director last term. She did a marvellous job, and everything ran very smoothly during my absence. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Bairnsdale ELC team, which had the enormous job of preparing for the triennial National Ratings and Assessment. The visit is an external process when the centre is assessed against the seven key areas of the Australian National Quality Standard.

They are:

  • Education program and practice.
  • Children’s health and safety.
  • Physical environment.
  • Staffing arrangements.
  • Relationships with children.
  • Collaborative partnerships with families and communities.
  • Governance and leadership.

Though we have yet to receive our report, the assessor commented on what a delightful, nurturing and educationally stimulating program we offer.

I love Term 4 as there is always a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air at the ELCs. A lot is happening as we prepare the children to move from Reception into the Transition class and the older children get ready to move into ‘big school’ and Foundation. We are also well into planning events to integrate our 2023 new ELC children and families into our Gippsland Grammar Community. Our preparation for all of these changes is comprehensive and planned to assist the children in developing skills to manage change and uncertainty, build relationships, and become confident in their new environments. Families can help by participating in any information evenings, orientation days and by reading the information that will be sent to you. It is important to do this even if your child has attended the ELC before as – even though this process is familiar to you – it is a whole new experience for your child. Dates for these events will be emailed to you shortly.

Over the next few weeks, our teachers have many special activities and events to enrich the children’s learning. This week at St Anne’s campus, the Transition groups have focused on learning about road safety in preparation for an excursion to Latrobe Traffic School next week. Learning to be safe near traffic is an important life skill that needs to be reinforced regularly, and I am sure that the children and families attending will have a marvellous day.
